Cheers Again!
Cheers Again! – Sep
2012
“Sometimes you wanna
go where everybody knows your name, and they are always glad you came….you
wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same, you wanna be where
everybody knows your name”
These opening lyrics from the popular American Sitcom
“Cheers” conveyed the warm and friendly atmosphere of a Bar that was at the
heart of this lovable and very successful program.
For years, PSI was indeed my ‘Cheers.’ I shared the same DNA
of my colleagues who were almost handpicked from the same stock. We did serious
work without taking ourselves seriously. We worked hard and partied harder.
Indeed, we did ‘development with a difference’ kicking ass while still kissing
butt at the same time.
Over the years as is naturally the case in large
organizations, the stock got ‘diluted’ and a new culture emerged. Slowly but
surely, I found myself becoming a dinosaur – with history but not relevant to
the future. I had to reinvent myself and this process is still very much a work
in progress. But, was PSI still Cheers for me? Alas no. Not pointing any
fingers at anyone, but this was indeed a natural outcome of the organization
growing and therefore like most, become risk averse rather than rewarding risk
taking.
For a couple of years, I was in a limbo. On one hand I was
battling trying to fight the changes that I saw happening to the organization I
loved while on the other looking outside to find my new Cheers. Another job/organization
was not the answer. But what then?
Yesterday, I took my parents for the first time to 136.1
Yoga Studio for an event. As I was introducing them to my many friends at the
studio, a realization occurred – I had indeed found my new Cheers. Truly, the
studio has wonderful vibrations and some of the people I have met there are
those with whom I most enjoy spending time. Two years ago, almost precisely to
this date, I walked into 136.1 Yoga Studio. The journey has been truly
transformational and while I wish I was a wee bit physically fitter, there is
no doubt that I am certainly a much happier person because of 136. In fact, my
attitude towards PSI and my work too has improved over this period.
And the words ““Sometimes
you wanna go where everybody knows your name”….echo in my head as I write
this piece.
